Derrick Gyles has been playing drums for decades and truly cut his teeth in the music industry during the era of New Wave and Alternative radio in the 1980’s. At a young age, he began playing professionally and was quickly snatched up into the western Canadian club and tour scene. In 1980, Derrick joined with Quality Records & Juno award winning artists, The Instructions, spending three years with them until signing on as drummer for platinum Recording artists, Strange Advance in 1983. Strange Advance’s huge hit ‘We Run’ propelled the band to stardom and to the forefront of the Canadian music scene. Due to this new found notoriety and his reputation as a solid, professional performer, Derrick was soon recruited to play drums for Canadian new wave standouts, Images in Vogue in the mid ‘80s. Thirty years later, IIV and Derrick still play the hits (Call It Love, Holiday, Lust For Love) for the occasional festival or worthy benefit. Derrick now spends his time as president and CEO of MAD Design Company, as well as playing live as a guest drummer for popular artists such as Platinum Blonde, The Spoons, and with members of The Guess Who and Loverboy. Derrick’s exuberance and love for the ‘80s is the indispensable backbone of The Bomb.
