Daniel Barnes

Daniel backs a top echelon of jazz artists in Canada including Holy Cole, Molly Johnson,
Micah Barnes, Heather Bambrick, Adi Braun, Colin Hunter, Jane Bunnett, Richard Underhill
and 25 years with (Order of Canada recipient) Joe Sealy. He’s backed visiting Americans
Geoff Keezer, Rick Margitza, Russ Nolan, Dizzy Reese, Don Braden and Ron Westray.
Daniel has earned distinction in World Music circles as well having toured Internationally
for a decade and recorded with Ethiopia’s “Aretha Franklin”, Ms Aster Aweke as well as a
father of Ethiopian Pop Mr. Mohamed Ahmed. His work with The Flying Bulgar Klezmer
Band was nominated for a JUNO Award in 2003 (as was his 2007 CD with Richard
Underhill) and his work with Joe Sealy won “Best Contemporary Jazz CD” in 1996.
Daniel has recorded and/or performed with Maryem Hassan, Theresa Tova and Eliana
Cuevas.
Daniel is a Jazz Recording Artist in his own right. His two CD’s 2003’s “Culmination” and
2007’s “Classic Beauties” are still in regular rotation across the country on The CBC and at
JazzFm. His live band has played The Montreal and Toronto International Jazz Festivals
plus many local festivals and club dates. They have been broadcast in performance from
TVO.
He studied privately with renown drum instructor Jim Blackley and bandleader Claude Ranger.
